With many areas of Atlantic Canada already closed to lobster fishing, and the rest of Atlantic Canada closing in the next 10 days, fishing pressure targeting halibut is increasing dramatically.

This is good news for consumers as wild halibut fillets this week are under $15 a pound. This is an excellent value for high-quality white meat fish. Until swordfish and tuna show up in force in the Emerald Basin, located 60 miles east of Halifax, the vast majority of the longline fleet will catch halibut, and the market will remain depressed.
