It’s been a tough month so far for rockfish availability, and prices have been ridiculously high. That will all change in a couple of weeks when pound-net season starts on June 1 in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The season runs through December 1.

Pound nets are a passive form of fishing. A pound net is essentially a stationary fish trap with a fence that guides fish into the trap. The fish are dipped live out of the trap and brought back to shore.

They are then boxed, iced, and sent to market. We expect pricing to be reasonable, with 2/4s and 5/8s under $15 per fillet, and large fillets under $20.
