As they do every year, the NMFS have closed many of the shallow water grouper fishing areas in the Gulf of Mexico until the end of March to allow the fish to spawn. The grouper market has been exceedingly tight this year, with prices for grouper being even higher than American red snapper. This closure will make the market conditions even tighter. If you need to find evidence of “entrenched inflation” in our economy, one has to look no further than the recent pricing on snapper or grouper of any species. Whole fish are selling for over $9 per pound wholesale. That’s about $25 per pound off the knife.
