Gulf Crabbers Pulling Their Pots up – No Market

The slow down in the US economy has had immediate ripple effects in the seafood industry, especially in the crab industry along the Gulf coast of Mexico. Crabbers in Louisiana are pulling their pots because they have no market for their “factory” crabs. Those are the crabs they sell to the picking houses. In Louisiana they call them “crab factories,” not “crab picking houses”. These picking houses are having a tough time selling their meat, and they don’t want to freeze or pasteurize meat right now because there is no guarantee they can sell it this winter.
