Canadian Oyster Shortage, East Coast Strong – Disease issues put serious pressure on Canadian oyster farms last year, forcing producers to move through most of their market-size inventory. That’s created a ripple effect, shifting demand onto Maine farms.
At the same time, an extremely cold winter has slowed growth and harvests in the Northeast, making it tough for Maine to keep up with the increased demand. As a result, we’re seeing some tightness in supply out of that region.
The good news? East Coast oysters overall are still rocking and rolling, with solid availability across several growing areas and plenty of options for menus.
